NASFAT, HAVEK Academy Inaugurates Leadership Fellowship Programme For Nigerian Youths

August 31, 2022
By Fausiat Salako-Sanni

Having a developed sense of who you are, what you can do, where you are going, coupled with the ability to influence your communication, emotions and behaviours on the way to getting there have been described as paths to Self-leadership traits.

This was disclosed at the formal opening and inaugural lecture of HAVEK Leadership Academy Fellowship programme webinar held on Sunday, August 28, 2022. The programme is themed: “Self-Leadership: The Tested and Trusted Pathway to a Better Future”. The fellowship programme is organized by the management of HAVEK Leadership Academy, a leadership training academy established by Nasrul-lahi-l-Fatih Society, NASFAT.

Dr. Lukman Raimi, MNIM, FIMC,FIFP, FCEnt, who is an Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship, Universiti Brunei Drussalam, Brunei South East Asia, was the guest lecturer of the day at the inaugural lecture of HAVEK Leadership Academy Fellowship programme webinar and spoke extensively on the theme.

Dr. Raimi said Self-Leadership can be learnt through practice not mere wishful thinking and it is the practice of intentionally influencing one’s thinking, feeling and behaviours to achieve personal set objectives. For Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) counsels Muslims on self-leadership where he states that “Everyone of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock” therefore, embarking on the journey of acquiring self-leadership education/knowledge can’t be underestimated because of its numerous benefits especially for humanity.

Dr. Raimi Lukman, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship, Universiti Brunei Drussalam, Brunei South East Asia, Guest Speaker at the Inaugural Lecture

“Self-leadership is a process, as well as behavioural and mental strategies through which individuals influence themselves to control and manage their actions and inactions.” Some of the pillars of self-leadership as identified by Dr. Raimi are Self-Discovery, Self-Acceptance, Self-Management and Self-Growth while every individual must possess these qualities, to be a renowned Self-leader, who wants to fulfill The Creator’s will and become a leader of impact to his/her country and humanity by extension.

Transparency, Communication, Recognition, Mentorship, Honesty, Fairness, Humanity, Inspiration and Negotiation are qualities of Self-leadership, he highlighted.

According to the General Manager of HAVEK Leadership Academy and the convener of HAVEK Leadership Fellowship Programme, Mr. AbdulWasiu Ayoola, who couldn’t hide his joy for the commencement of the programme:

“HAVEK Leadership Academy is established by NASFAT and open for people to acquire leadership roles that will help our Nation and humanity as a whole. The unveiling of HAVEK Leadership Fellowship Programme today is a dream come true that was conceived and born being a novel initiative of HAVEK Leadership Academy as part of the mandate given to the management by the Board of HAVEK in the year 2021.”

“The fellowship programme is the first ever Islamic Leadership programme that’s rich in moral and ethical contents based on the Islamic values for selected young vibrant emerging leaders among the youth population in Nigeria and beyond.”

He further stated that, this year’s programme, being the maiden edition and as part of the eligibility criteria designed, is to select participants from age 21-45 years. Hence, these scholars taking part this year fall within this age bracket. Thanking GOD for its reality.

Mr. Abdulwasiu Ayoola GM, HAVEK LEADERSHIP ACADEMY/Convener

“HAVEK Leadership Fellowship Programme is a 12-month calendar programme. Its packages include about Five-in-One (5-in-1) bundles. This means that the scholars of this programme throughout the next twelve(12) months will be taught the following courses Lecture modules, Mentoring sessions, Projects, Community service and Internship.”

“At the end of this programme, all scholars would become new qualified generation leaders to lead Nigeria and the world. We also believe that at the end of the day, HAVEK would have contributed to the collective efforts across the globe towards raising exceptional leaders.”

AbdulWasiu Ayoola, GM HAVEK L.A however enjoined the scholars to utilize the opportunity NASFAT has offered them through HAVEK L.A and take the programme as a platform to change the narratives and notions that the public already have about the concept of leadership, to the one that will be focused on what individuals can give to the society through worthy and responsible leadership roles surrounded by the fear of Allah SWT for the benefit of humanity.

The Chairperson of the occasion, an Associate Professor of Biochemistry, in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Lagos, UNILAG, Dr. Rahmat Adetutu Adisa, in her remarks reiterated that the core objective of the leadership fellowship programme, is to infuse leadership skills based on Islamic ethics and values for exceptional performance directed at building exceptional leaders and discovering talents.

She said, “The target audience of this programme are young professionals who are enthusiastic, talented and progressive in nature and willing to contribute productively and positively to the society.”

Dr. Rahmat Adetutu Adisa, an Associate Professor of Biochemistry, in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Lagos, UNILAG, Chairperson of the Occasion

“HAVEK L.A is focused and influenced by Islamic ethics and Islamic values, so that we can learn from the leaders like Prophets, the four Caliphs and others. NASFAT society is taking the larger cost implication of this initiative which runs to Millions of naira. The N3,500 paid by the participants is just to test their interest in the course.” said the President of NASFAT and Chief Host- Mr Olaniyi Yusuf.

According to Mr. Yusuf, “For now HAVEK programme is saddled with two major strong responsibilities namely; Building leaders among the leaderships of faith-based/Islamic organizations. Initiating programmes for individuals for the development of young leaders, aspiring leaders.
“So today marks another step in many ways NASFAT is contributing to the growth of Ummah beyond Asalatu. I congratulate the lucky 25 scholars who are able to scale through and become the pioneer Fellows of the programme out of over 160 applicants. While I assure you that, the Fellowship programme won’t just grant you leadership trainings but will rather open you to life long-lasting relationships with more Fellows, many Mentors as well as enormous opportunity to network with other Muslims in the area of leadership.”

He further advised the scholars to be willing to go beyond their comfort zones, to be focused and do the needful as the Board of HAVEK will be there to give necessary support they will need while appreciating the facilitators and all stakeholders in the cause.
