Moving Train Crushes Lagos State Staff Bus

Mutiu Abdullahi                                    March 09, 2023

Five persons have been feared dead and many others severely injured in a fatal accident involving a staff bus and a fast moving train at PWD bus stop, Ikeja, Lagos.

Investigations carried out at the scene have it that the bus with emblem of Lagos State Government and marked with number 250033, was hit in the middle by the train while it attempted to cross the track, dragging it a few metres.

On-going medical attention at LASUTH, Ikeja, Lagos.

Eyewitnesses especially passengers on board the train, blamed the driver of the bus for not heeding to the blair of horn of the train from as far as Ikeja before PWD, spot of the tragic incident.

The driver reportedly made attempt to escape but was apprehended by bystanders.

Victims of the accident included persons hanging on the train which took off from Ijoko in Ogun State.

It took over thirty minutes before any ambulance arrived the scene, before which rescue services were carried out by well meaning individuals.

LASEMA Director during press interview at the scene of the accident

An eyewitness, Mr Musa Hayatou alongside a number of eyewitnesses blamed the unfortunate incident on the absence of officials of the Nigeria Railway Corporation who control movement at terminals.

Mr Hayatou expressed disappointment over the late arrival of the emergency service providers, despite the closeness of the scene to the Lagos State General Hospital and Police State Command.

According to rescue team three persons are already confirmed dead while 84 receiving treatment operations by a combined team of Emergency Management agencies, LASAMBUS and LASUTH are ongoing as at the time of this report.
